Xiaomi takes seriously the fact that HyperOS is its own operating system, even though its foundations are based on Android. New news from China: Unlock the bootloader this will be an adventure On HyperOS and if you do this, you will not receive operating system updates.

This is a major splash of cold water that shuts the door on communities like Xiaomi.eu, which has been working on popular modified ROMs with smaller amounts of bloatware and custom Xiaomi services for years. The company wants HyperOS to remain unchanged, and the obstacles it will put forward to achieve this are not few.

First of all, if you are not familiar with the term, bootloader is the bootloader for Android phones. Its job is to perform certain checks when the device boots up and provide boot instructions to the system. By default it is always locked. If we unlock the bootloader, we can change this boot information, which opens the door to installing a custom recovery and changing the ROM.

Xiaomi confirmed on Android Authority that unlocking the bootloader of devices with HyperOS will be synonymous with losing the possibility of receiving new OS updates. Until now, as long as the original recovery was preserved, MIUI updates could still be received even if we unlocked the bootloader.

The matter goes further and even if we want to unlock the bootloader this task will not be easy. Xiaomi has been setting the time barrier for a while now. I had to request permission from my unlock page and wait a few days for the transaction to be confirmed.

The new conditions are as follows:

  • Reach level five on Xiaomi community website
  • Perform a real verification of our identity
  • Actively participate in the forum by answering user questions
  • We can only unlock three devices per year
  • Having the bootloader unlocked means no operating system updates

These terms refer to the Chinese ROM for now and are reflected in the bootloader unlocking policy in its country. It is hoped that the European ROM may be subject to a slightly looser policy, but this is unlikely given that the bootloader unlocking method is generally shared between ROMs.
