Smart hive reduces bee mortality by 80%: could prevent their global extinction

Today, May 20, is World Bee Day. That’s why it’s more important than ever to talk about technology that can detect and neutralize threats to the population.

What is known about the invention

One-third of the world’s food is pollinated by bees. According to statistics, 71 percent of the crop – vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts – depends on bees. Without them, of course, humanity will face catastrophic problems. By the way, scientists have long predicted the death of these most important pollinating insects for agriculture.

In the scientific community, this is called bee colony destruction syndrome when workers leave the hives forever, leaving the queens, their food source, and the nursing bees. In the United States in 2007-2013, the average winter loss of bee numbers was 30% at a normal level of 15%. Today this figure is over 35%. According to Beewise CEO and co-founder Sae Safri, when this figure reaches 50%, the world will not be able to prevent these insects from disappearing.

  • To neutralize the threats, the Israelis proposed a prototype of a clever beehive Beehome.
  • From afar, it looks more like a mobile lab, but with the appropriate “filling”.
  • hive equipped with precision robotic systems, computer vision and artificial intelligence.
  • This allows you to monitor the bees and their needs in real time.
  • Beekeepers do the same, but the creators of Beehome promise that their device will cope with tasks faster and more efficiently.

  • smart hive Instantly detects possible threats to the bee family – for example, the presence of pesticides or insect pests.
  • Then the device immediately turns on the protection mechanisms.
  • It is also programmed to feed the population at a time when natural food is not available for the bees.
  • There is also protection from serious emergencies such as fire, flood, Asian wasp infestation or killer hornet.

Our results speak for themselves. Beehome reduces bee mortality by 80 percent, from 35 percent to less than eight percent of bee colony losses in the field, resulting in a yield of at least 50 percent. Beehome eliminates about 90 percent of manual labor compared to traditional hives,
– says Saar Safra, CEO and co-founder of Beewise.
