According to a report by Korean media source The Elec, Samsung Display is making significant progress in OLED technology, especially in the development of blue phosphorescent OLED components (PHOLED).

Currently, red and green OLED components in displays use phosphorescent materials with 100% internal light efficiency, while blue OLEDs use less efficient fluorescent materials with only 25% efficiency. Samsung’s goal is to potentially reduce the overall power consumption of OLED by replacing these less efficient blue fluorescent materials with more efficient blue light emitting materials.

Market research firm UBI Research reported that this new material set, which is expected to be part of Samsung Display’s M15 flexible OLED material set, is planned to be released in the second half of 2025. Blue PHOLED materials were initially expected to be available in mid-2024. However, due to development issues, the deadlines were postponed to the second half of 2025.

The new blue PHOLED materials are expected to achieve a luminous efficiency of at least 55% and a luminance efficiency of over 65% compared to the materials used in previous sets such as the M11 and M13.

As reported by Sammobile, there is speculation that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Flip 7 could be the first devices to introduce the new blue PHOLED technology in 2025. However, this information has not yet been confirmed and durability concerns may affect its use in mainstream devices. Blue PHOLED materials under development have a lifetime of only 55% of the lifetime of blue fluorescent materials.

Although switching to blue PHOLEDs has the potential to significantly reduce energy consumption, the durability of these materials remains a challenge. Despite these problems, Samsung’s development of blue PHOLED technology is considered a great success in the OLED industry.
