A new report claims that Apple’s iPhone 16 series will not feature Touch ID fingerprint authentication technology. The information comes from an integrated circuit expert who has experience sharing information about Apple’s plans on Weibo.
In a new post, they explained that much of the hardware originally used to produce the chips needed for the iPhone version of Touch ID has now been permanently disabled, with the only remaining devices being used for the third-generation iPhone SE. He said Apple has no plans to revive Touch ID as an authentication method on iPhones in the near future.
It’s also worth noting that there are still no credible rumors that Apple’s fingerprint scanning technology will return to the iPhone 16 series.
Reports suggest that the fourth-generation iPhone SE will feature Face ID, replacing the last iPhone model that still had Touch ID. Even so, Apple is said to be working on an under-display fingerprint technology that will be released around 2026 – the company is also reportedly planning to move Face ID under the device’s display.
A Weibo source first reported that the iPhone 14 would retain the A15 Bionic chip, while the A16 would be exclusive to the “iPhone 14” Pro models. It was recently rumored that the chip designed for the upcoming “iPhone 16” and “iPhone 16” Plus will be made using a custom manufacturing process that is fundamentally different from the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone 15 Pro in order to reduce production costs.
