Only a few phones have under-display camera technology. It has not been widely used due to the complexities involved and hence has not yet become mainstream on smartphones. Apple has reportedly started working on under-display cameras for its iPhones. This will pave the way for full-screen bezel-less iPhones in the future.

The camera under the screen can make the iPhone full screen

This year, Apple switched from the traditional notched display to the Dynamic Island design across its entire iPhone lineup. The new generation SE model is expected to have the same pill-shaped cross-section.

Now, in a new report, Apple wants to completely transform Dynamic Island into under-screen camera technology in future iPhones. Korean supplier LG Innotek has begun advanced development of a panel camera (UPC) system, according to The Elec. The main problem of UPC is the loss of light transmission compared to current selfie cameras. Simply put, under-screen cameras produce lower quality images because less light passes through the screen area. To combat this, LG Innotek is working on a special lens system called “free-form optics”.

The Korean supplier’s solution will reduce distortion and increase the light intensity factor around the optical module by controlling the thickness of the peripheral lens. The report states that the camera technology under the screen will have to wait a long time to appear on the iPhone. Apple is expected to implement Face ID technology under the panel in the 2025 iPhone 17. The first full-screen iPhone with a UPC could launch in 2027 with the iPhone 19.
