Latest revelations from tipster Digital Chat Station show that Huawei is testing two advanced image sensors – Sony IMX989 and OmniVision OV50H.

This will be the first time Huawei uses a 1-inch image sensor in its flagship

The focus is on the 1-inch Sony IMX989, which is currently the largest sensor used inside a smartphone, as seen in devices like the Oppo Find X6 Pro. The large 1-inch size of this sensor increases the protrusion of the camera module without producing great photos and videos. Huawei is working with a 1-inch smartphone image sensor for the first time.

Tests suggest Huawei may use this 1-inch IMX989 sensor in its upcoming rumored flagship series Huawei P70. If this happens, it could represent a significant leap forward in Huawei’s imaging capabilities, given the camera improvements we’ve seen on some new flagships.

The second image sensor Huawei tested is the OmniVision OV50H. It has a resolution of 50 megapixels and an optical format size of 1/1.3 inches. The pixel size of this sensor is 1.2 µm compared to 1.6 µm of the 1-inch Sony IMX989.

OmniVision OV50H supports full resolution playback at 30fps, 12.5MP mode at 120fps, and HDR at 60fps. Supporting both DCG HDR and Staggered HDR, the OV50H showcases its prowess in dynamic range. This sensor can achieve a dynamic range of over 100dB when both HDR modes are enabled. Technically, the OV50H is a strong competitor in the market, although it does not have the largest surface area.

What is important in this context is to wait for the series. Huawei P70 It will be released in the first half of 2024. With all this, time will tell whether Huawei will consider using the above-mentioned sensors in the P70 series, based on the results of the tests.
