CMG’s technology, known as Active Listening, uses artificial intelligence to detect and analyze relevant conversations on smartphones, smart TVs and other devices. The company says it understands “what to do and when” and allows advertisers to target ads based on user conversations. However, there is currently no detailed explanation about the technology on the company’s website.

How does everything work?

The tracking process consists of creating “buyer personas” and matching them with keywords that interest CMG customers. The company says it analyzes data using artificial intelligence to create an “encrypted, evergreen audience list” for targeted advertising across platforms.

It is noteworthy that in November CMG talked about a technology partner that could: collect and analyze voice data during pre-purchase conversations. But the company’s failure to explain how the conversations were accessed and recorded raised questions about a potential privacy breach.

Adding to the confusion, CMG relied on a multi-page device terms of use agreement to justify its technology. The company claims to work with major technology companies such as Facebook, Microsoft, Google and Amazon, but only discloses that it is a member of these companies’ advertising partnership programs.

Someone seems to be hiding the truth

Following the dispute, CMG now claims: “He doesn’t listen to any conversation” and may only access an aggregated, anonymized and fully encrypted third-party data set to serve ads. The company classifies its advertising tools as third-party products based on data sets collected from users through various social networks and applications.

CMG’s claims may sound alarming, and the proliferation of voice assistants is raising concerns about users constantly eavesdropping on their own electronic devices. Changes in consumer privacy have shaped the discourse around user expectations and data protection, leading to ongoing lawsuits against major tech companies.

As technology continues to evolve, the delicate balance between meeting consumer needs and privacy may be compromised, if it hasn’t already been.
