Mobile phone market 2023 an interesting paradox: Less and less phones are being sold, but the share of premium smartphones is gradually increasing (over $600, according to the scale of our resource, Counterpoint Research).

And in this market, to the surprise of few, a clear dominant, follower and several other producers sharing the crumbs separation of the two larger ones. Surely when you read this you have already imagined who these two greats are.

Actually. Apple and Samsung.

Almost 90% of the premium market is in the hands of the duo

Specifically, Apple is a major dominator with a 71% market share, which was even higher last year. And Samsung follows with little change from 2022 at 17%.

Between them, they account for 90% of this premium market, leaving the remaining 10% in the hands of other manufacturers; Among them, three stand out: Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo. The rest, such as OnePlus, ZTE, Google, Vivo, Honor or Motorola, have lower market shares and are included in “Others” of up to 4%.

Huawei’s jump is commendable. The fiasco caused by the trade war between China and the USA has left the country in a delicate situation (it only survives in Spain), but it is certainly achieving better results than we could have predicted. It won the quota last year, partly due to the support it received in its country of origin.

And this market, the premium phone market, it just grew In recent years, it will increase from 6% in 2016 to 24% in 2023, but the data for the last quarter is still an estimate.

Inflation in the mobile phone industry in general has contributed so much to this that it has actually destroyed the low range we had before; like

At this point in the movie It’s quite debatable that the market for the “premium” range is only $600.but such a low bar at least serves to highlight the results this market consulting firm delivers. If there were 1,000 instead of 600, they would certainly be much more polarized, with Apple and Samsung further strengthening their lead.

Regarding this “ultra-premium” market, the consultancy explains that it is the firm that is driving this growth with more than a third of that market and “will likely continue to grow.” And here, manufacturers who create a brand strong enough that customers are willing to pay close to four figures for their phones will have an advantage over others.
