Recently MacRumors received new information about the model range Apple’s 2024 iPhones, including a look at prototype Pro devices. We’ve created a series of models based on Apple’s internal designs, and while prototypes aren’t yet complete, our images represent the clearest look we can expect from the next-generation iPhone at this point.

Based on the curved edges and titanium frame that Apple introduced in the iPhone 15 Pro, the new generation iPhone 16 Pro and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max have an increased screen size and a new capacitive capture button.

According to multiple sources, the “iPhone 16 Pro” (codenamed Diablo) and “iPhone 16 Pro” Max (codenamed Lightning) will be sized at 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches instead of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches It will have larger screens. One possible explanation for this change may be related to the 5x tetraprism telephoto camera that is expected to be available on both iPhone Pro models this year. In the iPhone 15 series, only the larger ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max includes a 5x telephoto lens, while the smaller ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ does not. The increased size of this year’s devices will allow Apple to add a tetraprism telephoto camera to both the iPhone 16 Pro‌ and 16 Pro Ma

While the overall form factor and overall design of the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ Max remained unchanged during Apple’s development phase, the company experimented with different design details for the devices. A total of four button configurations were tested, and Apple seems to have settled on a button design similar to the “iPhone 15 Pro”, but with a button added to the right side of the “iPhone”.

As with the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ and ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max, both Pro models in the iPhone 16 series will feature a multi-purpose Action button. The button can be configured to perform a number of functions depending on the user’s preferences. Although Apple has experimented with larger sizes and a different design for the Action button, current design documents suggest that the Action button will be the same size as the current “iPhone 15 Pro”.

The previous Action button design, codenamed Atlas, was designed as a larger capacitive button with a force sensor. Considering that the latest “iPhone 16 Pro” and Pro Max models do not have this larger Action button, the future of Project Atlas remains uncertain, and it’s entirely possible that Apple may have scrapped Project Atlas in favor of a standard mechanical Action button.

Weibo-like “Instant Digital” claimed in October that the “iPhone 16 Pro” would feature an Action button that sits flush with the frame of the device. Despite the internal documentation I’ve read MacRumors , confirms this statement, this was a feature of the previous development phase of “Proto1”. In the “Proto2” design we see now, the “Action” button is no longer flush with the frame and isn’t that big.

On the right, the ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ models have an all-new capture button, which we showed off in December images of the standard ‌iPhone 16‌ models. The Capture button, codenamed Nova, is expected to be a capacitive button with a force-sensing function and Marc Gurman Bloomberg He recently confirmed that it will be used to shoot videos. It is located below the power button; This means that on US models, Apple will move the mmWave antenna from the right side of the device to the left side. The capture button will be flush with the “iPhone” frame and will not protrude like the power and volume buttons.

In terms of materials, the “iPhone 16 Pro” and “iPhone 16 Pro” Max will continue to use the same Grade 5 titanium (Ti-6Al-4V) used in the iPhone 15 Pro, and there will be no significant change in the overall finish. As for colors, Apple’s prototypes use a “silver” color that Apple markets as “titanium white.” According to the documents, Apple is currently using the existing colors of the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max for testing purposes and plans to add another color. Unfortunately, there are no details about the new color option at the moment.

While the models we’ve created accurately represent current ‌iPhone 16 Pro‌ and Pro Max designs, the devices are still in development so changes are always possible and Apple may make additional design changes.
