Features and capabilities

ViXion01 is based on ToF (time of flight) sensor. This is the technology used in many modern cameras. It measures the distance between the camera and the object for each point of the image based on the time of flight, that is, the transit time of the artificial light signal provided by a laser or LED.

The ToF sensor allows you to quickly adjust lenses on the go. The basic concept is similar to the University of Utah prototype revealed at CES 2017, but ViXion has managed to miniaturize it and even begin commercialization. According to project director Toshiharu Uchiumi, his device will do wonders for improving small details in tasks such as creating models or reading small print.

Engadget journalist Richard Lai, who was able to test the technology, describes it as follows: “Initial setup was simple. First I had to manually shift both lenses to get a monocentric image, then I switched to the diopter adjustment dial on the right to focus on each of my pupils, and it worked great despite my near-4.5D myopia (I can connect this to Bluetooth 5.0). Although the ViXion01 weighs 50 grams, the main circuit and battery placed on the right side created an obvious imbalance, but I did not have enough time to adjust the fit on the left side. “The bendable handle and nose bracket”.

Lai adds that his vision has become sharper than normal at both long and close distances. It also didn’t experience the intense eye strain that often occurs when looking closely. Automatic switching between different focal lengths was also quick and seamless.

ViXion emphasizes that this is not a medical device and you should not wear it while driving or exercising. This makes sense given the limited field of view due to the black rings containing the lenses. However, 10 hours of battery life followed by three hours of USB-C charging should be sufficient. It’s also not waterproof, but it has an IPX3 rating, which means it can withstand some rain or sweat.

The ViXion01 is currently available for pre-order in Japan for ¥99,000 (approximately US$690). Deliveries are expected in February. An international launch is not planned yet.
