At CES 2024 in Las Vegas, Samsung Display introduced a 3,500 ppi OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) display that will apparently be used in its upcoming augmented reality (XR) headsets. As SamMobile notes, this is the world’s first OLEDoS display with sub-pixel RGB structure.
The OLEDoS display is a 1.03-inch square panel created by depositing organic materials onto a silicon wafer. According to the company, the new screen will not need a separate light source, so the image produced with it will be realistic.
The announced OLEDoS display was created using technologies from eMagin, a company that Samsung acquired in May last year. eMagin is also known as a manufacturer of helmets and night vision goggles for military use using OLEDoS panels.
Samsung Display did not disclose the features of the OLEDoS display. It is assumed that the resolution of the 1.03-inch panel may be 2500×2500 pixels and the refresh rate may be 90 Hz. Samsung is likely to use OLEDoS displays in its XR headset, which is expected to be released next year. It can also be assumed that the Samsung headset will receive the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 processor and a version of Android developed by Google for the XR headphones.
