OtterBox, known for its series of protective iPhone cases, today announced the launch of new cases made of cactus leather. According to OtterBox, the cases are designed to feel like leather but are made from the more sustainable and ethical cactus material.

Symmetry Cactus series soft-touch leather cases provide case protection unique to OtterBox accessories. It has a solid body design with reinforced corners to absorb impacts, raised edges for camera safety, screen edge to protect the screen, and DROP+ protection.

Cactus leather is derived from the Nopal cactus, more commonly known as prickly pear. Cactus leather production requires less land, water, and resources than traditional leather production, and when ripe prickly pear pads are harvested, the rest of the cactus remains alive and healthy for future harvests.

Cameraman MacRumors Dan Barbera had the opportunity to see OtterBox cases in person at CES and found the material to be superior to Apple’s FineWoven leather alternative.

OtterBox bundles the cases with cactus leather Apple Watch bands and a MagSafe wallet made from the same material. The first cactus leather cases will cost $60 and will be available on OtterBox in spring 2024.
