According to new rumors from Korea, the iPhone 16 Pro models to be released this year will be available with a new storage option of up to 2 TB. According to news aggregator account “yeux1122” on the Naver blog, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be available with twice the maximum storage capacity of the iPhone 15 Pro models.
This move is said to be a result of Apple’s recent switch to high-density Quad-Level Cell (QLC) NAND flash memory for its high-capacity drive models.
Using Apple’s QLC NAND could allow Apple to fit more storage into a smaller space, and it’s cheaper than the tri-level cell (TLC) NAND that current iPhones use. On the other hand, QLC has relatively lower reading and writing speed.
It is worth noting that in the past few years we have seen rumors that the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro will have 2TB versions for the same reason, but these turned out to be unfounded.
With all this, Apple is expected to add a new “Capture Button” to capture video on the iPhone 16 models this year. According to this InformationThis button is being introduced to further promote the iPhone as a horizontal video camera alternative, so offering larger storage options could be part of that plan.
