Gravity Industries developed a jet suit that cost approx. $483,000It is equipped with turbine engines placed on the pilot’s back and arms. For the last seven years, this company has been at the forefront of developing technologies for personalized flight, so to speak.
According to the agreement made with the local government, eight pilots, including Ahmed Al-Shehi, will participate in the race on behalf of the airline. EmiratesHe underwent intensive training at the British Gravity base. The names and affiliations of the remaining seven pilots have not yet been disclosed.
The race is expected to be a unique spectacle, with organizers promising more emotion and drama than traditional motor racing such as Formula 1.
Gravity’s founder, Richard Browning, expressed his excitement with these words:
Our Gravity racing series promises much more emotion and drama than Formula 1.
Roughly what the race will look like can be seen in this video:
The 1,050-horsepower, 27-kg jet suits were modified for the race to ensure the safety of the pilots. In case of accidental fall into water, the suits will have flotation elements. The innovative technology includes a turbine engine integrated with the fuel tank on the pilot’s back, as well as four smaller turbines located on the arms for flight control.
While details of the race format have yet to be agreed upon, Gravity has hinted at potential Formula 1-like mass start elements that would add an extra layer of competition and intensity. The company aims to create a complex flight path that will test participants’ maneuverability, accuracy and speed.
The event not only showcases the evolution of jet suit technology but also highlights the potential for personalized flight in areas beyond military use. Dubai is ready to pioneer this futuristic genre of motorsport and we will soon see how successful this idea is.
