Brett Elmore, the station’s general manager, told NBC News he couldn’t believe it when he got a call from station employees saying the tower was missing.
What do you mean when you say the tower is gone? Are you sure you’re in the right place? Elmore remembers his surprise.
It appears that the thieves dismantled the tower, leaving only cables and debris behind. They also looted a nearby building, taking everything of value.
Elmore noted that the radio station was not insured and stated that the damage was estimated approximately. $300,000.
“It’s a huge loss. People are reaching out and asking how they can help, but unless you have a 200-foot tower and an AM transmitter, I don’t know how you can help,” Elmore said.
He said he had no idea who might have stolen the 60-foot radio tower and why.
Elmore said he was determined to get the station back on the air as soon as possible, but acknowledged it wouldn’t be easy as it was a station with a small market.
The local police are investigating a mysterious theft, but everyone is pleasantly shocked by such an incident, because they do not understand who and why might need the radio tower and its equipment.
