It’s been a long time since mobile gaming has ceased to be a simple experience. Currently, it’s possible to find great games based on major franchises, as well as complete experiences originally designed for consoles and PC; see ‘Genshin Impact’, ‘Death Stranding’ or ‘Resident Evil’. The latest to arrive will be, or rather will be, ‘Warframe’, and it’s clear evidence that things have changed.
‘Warframe’ is coming to mobile devices. More specifically, iPhones and iPads. ‘Warframe’ is an MMORPG with action and shooter tones, developed by Digital Extremes. It is a very well-known game with a very large player base, available on all platforms: PC, current and previous generation consoles, and Nintendo Switch. It’s one of those games like ‘Destiny 2’ that is hard to believe is free. Its arrival on iOS was confirmed on February 20, it is now available to reserve on the App Store and will be compatible with devices running Apple 12 Bionic or later.
A complete experience. The transition of console and PC games to the mobile environment is not new. ‘Diablo’ is followed by ‘Diablo Inmortal’, ‘Call of Duty’ with its mobile version, ‘GTA’, ‘Genshin Impact’ etc. He succeeded with. The thing is that, as a general rule, we are talking about mobile versions. ‘Call of Duty Mobile’ is not ‘Call of Duty’, it is ‘Call of Duty’ for mobile, these are separate experiences. But ‘Warframe’ is an adaptation. This is a complete game that PC, console, and Nintendo Switch players can play exclusively on mobile devices. Like ‘Genshin Impact’ or ‘Tower of Fantasy’. As Digital Extremes states on the title page:
“’Warframe’ for iOS was designed and developed as another way to play the entire game. It’s the complete, interconnected console experience on mobile, with optional cross-progression and cross-play across all other platforms. Players will have access to all story content and gameplay from other versions and will be able to seamlessly join players on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, Nintendo Switch and PC.’
By the way, you can play with a controller, although the touch interface is available.
Mobile as platform. It’s no secret that mobile is an excellent gaming platform. It has the most revenue ($90.4 billion in 2023, compared to 53.0 billion consoles, according to the latest Newzoo report) and the most users ($2.789 million, compared to 625 million consoles, according to the same report). The reason is simple: Not everyone has a gaming computer or console at home, but everyone (or almost everyone) has a mobile phone in their pocket. This is especially notable in Asia, one of the largest markets in the world, where mobile gaming has a big role.
More power appreciated. Current smartphones, on the other hand, have more than enough power to move big games. It is true that they are not at the level of a console yet, at least in terms of graphics, but at least in terms of graphics it is not a high-end PC, but it is rare for a premium and higher mid-range terminal that cannot handle gaming with ease. . . We will even see ray tracing coming to mobile phones, and Qualcomm is already working on a scaling version of artificial intelligence: Snapdragon Game Super Solution.
There are more and more. Given what we’ve seen, it makes perfect sense for video game companies to invest in this support. It’s not a coincidence that ‘Death Stranding’ and ‘Resident Evil’ have reached the iPhone, nor is it a coincidence that Sony and Microsoft are looking at mobile phones as an expansion platform. It’s no secret that cloud gaming has enabled many people to play complete experiences from their smartphones, and companies like Netflix that previously had nothing to do with video games have found a new vein in mobile gaming.
