The unnamed patient underwent surgery to implant a chip with 1,024 electrodes that can record and stimulate neural activity into his brain. The chip connects to a wireless device that communicates with a computer behind the ear.
According to Musk, the patient has fully recovered from the operation and can control the cursor on the screen by thinking. The next step is to teach him to press the virtual mouse button.
Human trials have just begun
Last September, Neuralink received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to conduct human clinical trials. The company plans to conduct 10 more operations this year and 27 more next year. By the end of the decade, Neuralink hopes to realize this operation 22,204 operations per year and generate $100 million in revenue.
Neuralink’s ultimate goal is to enable humans to seamlessly interact with machines and artificial intelligence, as well as treat diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and spinal cord injuries.
