We knew that the 2023 smartphone market was finding its green shoots with fewer and fewer sales at the end of the year after a long downward trend. We also knew that if a range recovered it was the high range, where sales remained stronger than in the low and mid ranges. Now we know something else, and it’s about Apple.

According to the latest report published by market consultancy Counterpoint Research, seven of the ten best-selling smartphone models in 2023 were iPhones. They also occupy the top seven positions.

A market concentrated in the top 10 and a four-digit average price

Apple became the leading manufacturer in phone sales in 2023. It became the company that sold the most units, not just in terms of revenue, profit or average price. Thus, it dethroned Samsung, which had been the leader for almost thirty years. This was the information we had in January, and now we have access to certain models in February.

Apple’s iPhone release schedule does not correspond to calendar years, as it usually occurs in September. For this reason, iPhone sales of previous generations (13 and 14) seem to be higher than the current generation (15).

More parts also stand out:

  • Pro Max, Pro and base models were the best sellers in the 15th generation in the first quarter respectively
  • For the 14th, the underlying has led the market for at least the last three quarters
  • Plus versions do not appear on either the 14 or the 15, which confirms the waning market interest in them
  • The average price of the iPhones in the table is around 1,000 euros
  • The average price of three Samsungs is between 200 and 240 euros

And one last point of curiosity that the consultant pointed out: The phone market is increasingly concentrating on these top ten models. They increased their market share from 19% to 20% in 2022. There has never been a number this high.

This means that small manufacturers are increasingly being swallowed by the big ones, especially Apple, which is dominating 2023 with an iron fist. He is no longer the only person making the most money selling mobile phones; It also conquered what Samsung had been denied since 2010: leadership in units sold.

One of the obsessions we had seven years ago Xataka This was the rise of smartphones priced above 1,000 euros; wondering how they would fare in the market and whether they would be rejected, accepted by a niche, or outright successful. We already have the answer.
