One of the biggest assets of the Samsung Galaxy S24 is its artificial intelligence. Galaxy AI is Samsung’s name for new AI functions that allow it to translate calls in real time, transcribe audio, or edit photos in different ways (and with varying results), among other things. This technology has so far been exclusive to the next generation of Korean smartphones, but now the company has confirmed that it will come to the previous one, when it will arrive and what functions will be available.

The previous generation, literally. When we say that artificial intelligence will reach the older generation, we mean it literally. Galaxy AI will be available on the Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+ and Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Galaxy S23 FE, the last two foldable models (Galaxy Z Fold5 and Z Flip5) and the Galaxy Tab S9 series (Galaxy Tab S9, Tab). S9+ and Tab S9 Ultra). It will do this with the One UI 6.1 update starting in March.

A hybrid approach. AI will work by combining local execution with cloud computing. For example, features such as live translation, notes assistant, or productive image editing will require an active Internet connection. Samsung doesn’t specify in its description which functions (if any) will only be available locally. What we do know is that AI can be turned off if we want.

Available Features. However, Samsung claims that some artificial intelligence features on the Galaxy S24 may not be available on older models. Which one? It has not been announced yet. Here’s what we know:

• Chat assistant: to set the tone and translate messages. It works in 13 languages.
• Real-time translation for calls.
• Translator: To talk to other people using your smartphone as a translator.
• Circle to Search: Google’s new feature that will improve Google Lens.
• Notes Assistant: allows you to create summaries, format and translate notes.
• Navigation Assistant: Only works on the Samsung browser but allows you to summarize and translate articles.
• Transcription Assistant: To transcribe audio recordings in real time and create summaries and translations.
• Productive editing: allows you to scale, reposition and realign objects in a photo by filling in empty areas.
• Editing suggestions: Allows the user to get editing suggestions to apply directly from the gallery.
• Instant Slow Motion: To convert any video into slow motion.

There’s nothing mid-range for now.. It is noteworthy that there is not a single mid-range device in the list of terminals to be updated, but it is somehow logical that Samsung wants to make Galaxy AI an exclusive function of its top range at least at this initial stage. But Samsung Mobile’s president, TM Roh, hinted at where things might go with future launches:

• “This is just the beginning for Galaxy AI, as we plan to bring this experience to more than 100 million Galaxy users in 2024 and continue to develop ways to leverage the limitless possibilities of mobile AI.”
