What is known

According to reports in the Irish media, after the investigation, the suspect was Caught with $1500 worth of heroin near Clovergill Prison in West Dublin. He may also have been involved in the smuggling of banned substances into nearby Whitfield Prison. A subsequent search of his home turned up $250,000 in cash and other evidence of ill-gotten gains.

According to authorities, his actions caused prisons in this region to flood with an influx of heroin and diamorphine.

At last week’s hearing, the defendant was described as a “grandfather” even though he was only 44 years old. This grandfather reportedly confessed to his involvement in distributing drugs to prisons. After hearing testimony at the first hearing, the judge set bail at just $2,400 and allowed the defendant to remain free so he could attend the christening of one of his grandchildren.

The media points out that in this case the court showed rather unusual leniency. The source said this was even more visible given the increasingly bold use of drones and other drug-trafficking tools in Irish prisons, as well as the recent behavior of prisoners who attempted to videotape drug use and taunted authorities.

The use of drones to transport drugs and other contraband into prisons has become a real nuisance for authorities in the United States, Europe and Latin America. This is particularly problematic because such facilities often have little or no protection against UAVs that could identify or reduce the number of such flights.
