It is also 2.5 times faster than UHS-II microSD cards and 1.4 times faster than SATA SSDs. So at least in theory, Samsung’s new flash card should be noticeably faster than the cheapest solid-state drives.
Samsung has added thermal management features to help keep temperatures under control.
To ensure stable performance and reliability for a small form factor, Dynamic Thermal Protection (DTG) technology maintains the optimal temperature for SD Express microSD cards even during extended periods of use.
– the company wrote a press release announcing the new memory card.
Of course, following the latest fashion, Samsung did not forget artificial intelligence while promoting the new technology. The company says users will get new microSD cards “Effective solutions to meet the growing needs of mobile computing and artificial intelligence on devices”.
However, there is an interesting and controversial point here: In the Galaxy S24 series smartphones, the company is betting on artificial intelligence, but for the last four generations Samsung’s flagship phones have no slot for microSD memory cardslike most other smartphones. While future AI devices may benefit from the extra speeds, Samsung’s current flagship phones are not included in this list.
Also, while SD Express is backwards compatible, very few devices (yet) support this technologyThis requires an additional contact line on the device. In other words, the full potential of the card won’t be realized until we get new hardware to support it.
The 256-gigabyte high-speed Samsung SD Express microSD card will be available “later this year.” The company didn’t say how much this would cost.
Although it is not related to the speed of the SD Express card, Samsung also introduced New microSD memory card with 1 terabyte capacity at UHS-1 speed. It features eight layers of 1TB 8th-generation V-NAND in a microSD form factor, realizing a high-capacity package previously only possible with solid-state drives. The card is protected against water, extreme temperatures, drops, X-rays and magnets.
