Although the promises of Apple’s president Tim Cook (Tim Cook) that he would make a major announcement about artificial intelligence systems by the end of the year attracted the attention of many, few could have guessed that the company would cooperate with its competitors. According to Bloomberg, Google’s Gemini platform could be the basis for some new iPhone features that should be introduced this fall.

Bloomberg sources reported that Google and Apple are in active talks to license the artificial intelligence platform Gemini for use in the latter company’s devices. Recently, Apple had held similar talks with OpenAI, hoping to benefit from this successful initiative’s developments in artificial intelligence.

Coming back to Google, the search giant’s collaboration with Apple in a different form has been going on for many years, as the former pays the latter for the right to use the default search engine in the Safari browser. It is installed on many Apple devices. There is no clear agreement yet on the future of Gemini usage.

Undoubtedly, Apple is preparing specific artificial intelligence functions it has developed for its devices. Especially since, as informed sources note, Apple’s own chatbots and other current developments are inferior to third-party solutions in terms of performance and accuracy. In particular, Apple has been testing a large language model codenamed Ajax since the beginning of last year. Some employees tested Apple’s GPT basic chatbot.

In this context, Apple needs a platform that works in the cloud, and it makes sense to cooperate with Google in this area. For Google, the agreement of this plan is also profitable, because more than 2 billion Apple devices are currently used in the world. The rival company didn’t “reinvent the wheel” either, and in January announced the use of Google Gemini in its next-generation smartphones.

The only thing that could cast a shadow on Apple and Google’s possible collaboration in this area is the attention of regulatory authorities. At least the US Department of Justice is currently investigating Apple and Google’s collaboration in the use of the search engine. European authorities also have claims against Apple in this area. If some new deals are reached, most likely with Google, Apple is unlikely to make any announcements before June, when it holds its WWDC 2024 developer conference.
