We were inspired by nature
The inspiration for this innovation was the aerodynamics of the maple seed, which has long fascinated researchers due to its optimal mass and aerodynamic design. The seed’s single “propeller” allows it to spin around its center of mass and travel long distances on windy days.
Using this natural design, a Chinese team has developed small FPV quadcopters that can be split into two, three or even six separate UAVs on command.

These drones use aerodynamics and maple seed shape with modifications to provide optimal overall aerodynamics when flying in a group. Establishing high-speed communication between drones after separation was a significant challenge, but this task was successfully solved.
The technology is still evolving, but its potential is undeniable. As the world moves towards the deployment of swarm drones, these “self-replicating” drones are a significant leap forward that offers strategic advantages in emergencies and beyond.
