Almost two years later we have a new telecommunications giant. It is called MASORANGE and is the result of the complete merger of Grupo MásMóvil and Orange. The new company will automatically be the leader in the Spanish market in terms of number of customers and also one of the 20 largest companies in Spain in terms of revenue.

scandalous figures. The numbers are absolutely spectacular: MASORANGE was born with more than 30 million mobile lines, more than 7.3 million users and 2.3 million users of the television platform. Its market share is over 40% in both fixed and mobile.

Customers are everywhere. According to those responsible, FTTH (Fiber to the Home) coverage is the widest in Spain: 20 million marketable homes with fiber optics, in addition to 98% 4G mobile coverage and more than 80% 5G coverage in more than 2,500 Spanish municipalities.

Investing in the future. In this opening statement, the company announced its intention to invest approximately 4 billion euros over the next three years. Among other things, covering up to six million additional homes and more than 1,700 new municipalities with fiber optics, as well as increasing 5G coverage to over 90% of the population.

The new giant of the Spanish economy. The merger of these companies required a lengthy process of analysis and approval by regulatory authorities, but resulted in a company that is among the 20 most important companies in Spain, with revenues exceeding €7.4 billion. Operating results (EBITDA) of 2.6 billion euros and the valuation of the combined company exceeded 18.6 billion euros.

One company, many brands. Although the parent company will be MASORANGE, the company states that the brands that have brought it to its current success will continue to exist (at least a priori). Thus, there will be ten brands at the national level (Orange, Yoigo, Jazztel, MASMOVIL, Simyo, Pepephone, Virgin Telco, Lebara, Lyca and Lmaya) and five brands at the regional level (Euskaltel, R, Telecable, Guuk and Embou). ).

Telefónica and Vodafone are behind in broadband… The market for major telecommunications operators in Spain is transforming. As noted by our colleagues at Xataka Móvil, MASORANGE ranks first in broadband market share with 41.8%, while Telefónica is in second place with 33.5% share. Vodafone ranks third with 16.7%, while Digi ranks fourth with 7.2%.

And on mobile lines (but not on TV). In the mobility segment, the situation is even more pronounced: MASORANGE has a 42.8% market share, while Movistar has 27%, Vodafone 22% and Digi 7.5%. Among television platform users, Movistar is ahead of MASORANGE’s 31.6% and Vodafone’s 19.9%, with a 48.5% share.

less competition. The merger had an immediate impact on the telecommunications landscape in our country, where we now have one less player. As noted by Xataka Móvil, this could reduce competition. This now makes Digi the most aggressive company in terms of prices and growth opportunities, but there are other considerations as well.

Football. For example, the future of television broadcasting and football: Now Orange will have more customers in negotiations depending on the number of users of each platform. There may be a decrease in the number of MVNOs operating in Spain, with well-established brands such as Simyo, Jazztel, Yoigo or Pepephone at the forefront, with a scheme that can be simplified.

Telefónica is no longer Telefónica (and that’s not necessarily bad). The other unique impact of the birth of MASORANGE is that Telefónica is no longer the dominant operator, which will prevent some initiatives from slowing down and at the same time allow it to be more commercially aggressive.
