There are news about foldable iPhones from time to time, but there is no detailed news that Apple will launch such a device in the near future. A recent report reinforces this trend; Those expecting a complex iPhone from Apple may have to lower their expectations. Apple has significantly scaled back its plans to enter the foldable smartphone market, according to a new report from DigiTimes.
The report, based on information from South Korean sources, shows that Apple has postponed the launch of its first foldable iPhone from the fourth quarter of 2026 to the first quarter of 2027. This delay means we could see a foldable iPhone around the same time as Samsung’s potential Galaxy Z Fold 9 release.
Samsung introduced its first foldable device in 2019 and developed the technology to the point where foldable devices can be used as daily devices.
Meanwhile, Apple has repeatedly delayed its launch plans, citing concerns that the technology is not yet mature enough to meet high standards. See, this gives Samsung more room to dominate in a complex space. Interestingly, Apple has not changed its plans regarding component sourcing. Display vendors such as Samsung Display and LG Display are still willing to provide flexible displays for the foldable iPhone.
Additionally, Apple has reportedly reassigned some of its employees on the Vision Pro AR/VR headset project to work on the foldable iPhone. Reports indicate that Apple is considering two possible designs for its foldable iPhone. One of them resembles a book, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold, with a 6-inch outer screen and an 8-inch inner screen. Another design folds in a clamshell style, similar to the Galaxy Z Flip series.
It is not yet known when and whether Apple will launch its foldable device. However, it is clear that the Cupertino-based company is actively working on the technology, which gives hope for the final version.
