Nokia 1680 turned into a computer with Linux

The Nokia 1680 classic is a simple button cell phone released in 2008, when smartphones began to emerge. Calling, receiving and sending SMS, etc. functions, but only on 2G mobile networks. However, a hardware hacker and enthusiast under the alias Remu NotMoe has managed to turn a simple “dialer” into a full-fledged Linux PC. He named the project Notkia.

And so he created a special circuit board made up of CPU, memory and other components. Instead, the keyboard is pretty original. The board is equipped with a single core MIPS Ingenic X100E processor running at 1 GHz, 64 MB RAM, 32 MB NOR flash memory and 4 GB SLC NAND flash memory.

Although the screen is too big for the body, it has a 2-inch IPS display with a resolution of 240×320 pixels. As a result, the apparent screen resolution is 220 × 280 pixels – the edges are not visible.

Among other features of Notkia, we note the following:

  • USB Type-C port;
  • 5MP Waveshare OV5640 camera with autofocus;
  • Yamaha MA-3 music synthesizer (with ringer support);
  • analog MEMS microphone;
  • AMPAK adapter with Wi-Fi 4 and BT 4.0 LE;
  • Semtech SX126x LoRa receiver;
  • battery BL-5C.

All this works under Linux control, including text input using the original numeric keypad. T9 technology is also supported. The device can be used as a computer, radio or modem. But Notkia does not know how to make phone calls. The fact is that Remu NotMoe did not find a fairly compact 4G LTE module.
