this guide 24 Channels It contains comprehensive steps to help you recover with minimal loss on Windows and macOS systems.

Recover files using Document Recovery Panel

One of the main features of Microsoft Word is the “Document Recovery” panel, which automatically saves unsaved work in case the program crashes or closes unexpectedly.

When you reopen Microsoft Word after a crash, you will see the Document Recovery window in the left sidebar. All unsaved documents are listed here, along with the date and time of the last autosave.

Step by step recovery steps from Document Recovery panel

  1. Start Microsoft Word.
  2. Go to the Document Recovery panel in the left sidebar.
  3. Select the document you want to restore from the list.

Restore unsaved documents from autosave folder

Microsoft Word also stores unsaved documents as temporary files in the AutoRecover folder. This allows you to restore them later if the Restore Documents panel is not available.

For windows:

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. Click the “File” menu in the upper left corner.
  3. Go to “About” in the left sidebar.
  4. Click “Document Management” and select “Recover Unsaved Documents”.
  5. A list of unsaved documents stored in temporary files will be displayed.
  6. Find files with ASD extension.
  7. Select the unsaved file you want to restore and click “Open”.

For macOS:

  1. Click on the finder icon.
  2. Select the entire computer.
  3. Type “AutoRecover” in the search box to view the list of unsaved files saved by Microsoft Word.
  4. Find the file you want to restore and double-click it.
  5. Save the document as usual.

Restore an unsaved document from a OneDrive or Time Machine backup

If you turn on AutoSave in Microsoft Word, your documents will always be saved to OneDrive. This cloud storage can store the latest version of the file just before the failure.

Steps to restore from OneDrive

  1. Go to OneDrive and sign in to your account.
  2. Go to the My Files tab.
  3. Find your document and check the last modified timestamp.

For macOS users, Time Machine can be a lifesaver if you use it to back up your files.

Restore with Time Machine

  1. Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar to launch Time Machine.
  2. Browse through your backups and find the Word document you want to restore.
  3. Select the file and click the “Recover” button.

Recovering unsaved Word documents is generally easy thanks to Microsoft’s powerful recovery features. The Document Recovery panel is often the fastest way to regain access to your files.

If that doesn’t work, an AutoRecover folder and cloud backup services like OneDrive or Time Machine provide additional protection. By following these steps, you can minimize the risk of losing valuable work even after unexpected outages.
