Apple devices are getting thicker and thicker. This is a fact, as my compatriots in Montalbán would say, a fact, and it means a lot in the world. The addition of more powerful cameras and higher-capacity batteries means increasing the thickness of the devices, but this path looks set to end with the launch of the iPad Pro (2024), the thinnest iPad Apple has ever produced. This is also evident in the latest leaks courtesy of Mark Gurman, one of the most respected people in the Apple world.
iPad Pro, it all starts with you. According to a Bloomberg reporter, “Apple’s new iPad Pro paves the way for iPhones and other thinner devices.” The new iPad Pro (2024) has a thickness of 5.1 and 5.3 mm (depending on the 11- or 13-inch version), which is a very significant improvement over the 2022 iPad Pro, which is almost six millimeters thick. The thickness of the 2021 iPad Pro has been improved (5.9 and 6.4 millimeters depending on the size of the screen).
The important thing is that the device can offer similar autonomy to previous models in a less thick format. According to Gurman, Apple is focusing on bringing the same design philosophy to the iPhone 17 (we’ll see it next year), Macbook Pro, and Apple Watch. According to insider information, the aim is for these devices to be “the lightest and thinnest devices in their categories in the industry.”
Have Apple devices gotten this fat? Let’s see, starting with the iPhone. In the table below, we can see how the thickness and weight of Apple phones have changed since the iPhone 11, and it’s clear that iPhones have become a bit plumper over the years.

Similar to Apple Watch. The watches also experienced a slight increase in weight rather than thickness. Not to mention the arrival of the Apple Watch Ultra, the biggest smartwatches Apple has ever produced. To put it into perspective, we implemented the same thing we did on iPhones.

What about with the MacBook Pro? On the contrary, they are devices that have become a little lighter. The 13″ MacBook Pro (2020) weighed 1.4 kilos and was 15.6 mm thick; the 14″ MacBook Pro (2021) was 15.5 mm and 1.61 kilos, and the latest MacBook Pro 14″ (2023) was 15.5 millimeters thick and weighed 1.55 kilos. However, there is still room for improvement.
Of course, we’ll have to wait until we see this new way implemented on devices. The iPad Pro (2024) is the first step, and in the case of the iPhone, the arrival of titanium has managed to reduce the weight, although its thickness remains close to eight millimeters. There has been no change in thickness on the Apple Watch and there is room for the numbers to be reduced. Only time will tell.
