Launch of a competition with important opportunities for Latin American photographers.

Work on 18.To Entries for the Sony World Photography Awards can be submitted from June 1, 2024 via worldphoto.org and are free to enter.

The Sony World Photography Awards is a major annual event celebrating the best contemporary photography in the world. The awards celebrate images that shape our visual language today, providing photographers around the world with visibility and meaningful opportunities. Organized by Creo through its photography arm, the World Photography Organization, the awards are at the core of the Creo program and its mission to empower creative talent. Sony supports the celebration of the awards to further advance photographic culture and provide a global platform for today’s talent.

Photographers from around the world are invited to enter the four competitions that make up the awards: Professional, which recognises outstanding series of 5-10 images across 10 categories; Open, which recognises the best unique images of the year across 10 categories; Youth, which recognises images from emerging talent aged 19 and under; and Student, which highlights the projects of student photographers from around the world.

Latin American photographers who submit their photo series to the Professional Competition will also have the opportunity to participate in the Latin American Professional Award., which rewards the best series of photographs in the region. Similarly, the Latin American Regional Prize is awarded to individual photographs submitted to an open competition. These awards, aimed specifically at Latin American photographers, provide an opportunity to present their work internationally, and the winners receive digital imaging equipment from Sony and an exhibition of their work.

Other awards programs include the National and Regional Awards and the Alpha Female Award. Key awards include the Sustainable Development Award, developed in partnership with the United Nations Foundation and Sony Pictures.

Registration is completely free and photographers are vetted anonymously by a panel of industry experts.

New in 2025

New nomination in the Professional Competition: Prospects

The 2025 Prize introduces an attractive new category in the professional competition; entrants will have the opportunity to submit a full work in the category Prospects. This category welcomes series that tell a story in a variety of formats and genres, from using a documentary or creative approach to mixing portraits, landscapes and still lifes, all tied together in a deliberate and coherent manner with a clear sense of storytelling. Judges will select entries ranging from well-known stories or everyday moments captured from a new angle, to depictions of lesser-known subcultures or recreations of local folktales. The series must reflect a distinctive voice and passion for the subject.

Topic of the student competition: At first

This year’s student competition asks photographers to respond to a theme. At first. Starting something new can be an exciting opportunity, and documenting the moment in time or space where something begins has become a popular theme among photography projects over time.

The theme of the youth competition: Open competition – show us your best images! (Open competition: show us your best images!)

The Youth Photographers Competition invites photographers to submit their favorite photographs taken in 2024. Participants can submit up to three of their unique and striking images and share them with the judges. All styles, genres and photographic approaches are welcome.

Closing dates and prizes 2025

Registration for the Sony World Photography Awards opened on 1 June 2024. Details of all competitions and categories can be found at worldphoto.org.

The deadlines for registration to submit works to the various competitions are as follows:

Professional: January 10, 2025, 13:00 GMT

Open: January 3, 2025, 13:00 GMT.

Student: November 29, 2024, 13:00 GMT.

Youth: January 3, 2025, 13:00 GMT.

All winners of the various categories of professional, open, youth and student competitions will receive digital imaging equipment from Sony. In addition, cash prizes will be awarded Photographer of the year (US$25,000), Open competition “Photographer of the Year” (US$5,000) and the Sustainable Development Award Winner (US$5,000). The title holder Photographer of the year He will also have the opportunity to present his work separately at the Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in London next year. All winners and shortlisted photographers will have their work displayed at the annual Sony World Photography Awards exhibition in London and will then tour internationally. The winning images will also be published in the awards yearbook.
