Strategy changes are a constant at Apple. There was a time not too long ago when both the Pro and standard models shared the same processor, and that made sense. Similar models with differences in camera and display technology give it the Pro essence.

With the iPhone 14, Apple decided that being “Pro” should go hand in hand with having a “Pro” processor. So it decided to equip the iPhone 14 with the previous-generation Apple A15 Bionic and reserved the new processor for only the most expensive models.

The same thing happened with the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro. Only the Pro models have a new processor. According to recent leaks, the iPhone 16 will share a processor we haven’t seen in two years. Why? I’m very afraid they’re not very clear.

According to MacRumors , leaks in the code of the so-called iPhone 16 reveal that all devices in this series will share a chip. This is information that matches previous leaks and lines of code that appeared a few months ago: everything points in the same direction.

One possible reason attributed to this change in philosophy has to do with Apple Intelligence and its rather demanding hardware requirements, so much so that they left out the iPhone 15, which featured the A16 Bionic instead of the iPhone 15 Pro’s A17 Pro.

Technically You don’t need to use A18 to carry Apple Intelligence: A17 Pro supported. Problem? The terminology could be a bad move for Apple. The company can’t provide the A17 Pro for the iPhone 16 due to its philosophy (“Pro” processors are only for “Pro” processors). That would force them to implement an A18 processor shared with its bigger brothers.

However, that doesn’t mean the iPhone 16 and 16 Pro have the same processor. Barring a big surprise, if they do share a chip, there will also be a “Pro” version of the iPhone 16 Pro with different perks.

A little chaos that makes sense at the market level, although it moves us away from a past where you bought the iPhone you bought, with the best processor of the moment.
