It is worth noting that there is nothing unexpected in this, because China is currently implementing the energy project it plans to build. 455 gigawatt wind and solar power plantThese projects would be located in sparsely populated but resource-rich areas and would direct the energy generated to large urban centers, such as cities on China’s east coast. So both the previous 5-gigawatt plant and this new one are part of a larger plan to transition to clean energy (or at least a partial transition, since the project would also build coal-fired power plants, albeit in much smaller numbers).

What is the capacity of the future power plant?

State-owned energy company China Three Gorges Renewables Group will build a solar power plant with a capacity of 1,000 m2. 8 gigawatt and is worth almost $11 billion.

It’s hard to imagine how much land the solar panels would cover to generate that much power, but it’s likely to be larger than the previous record holder, which covered 810 square kilometres (81,000 hectares).

In addition to the giant solar farm, the project will also include 4 gigawatts of wind power, 5 gigawatt hours of energy storage, 200 megawatts of solar thermal and 4 gigawatts of coal-fired power plants, all in Ordos, a region of Inner Mongolia in northern China.

The new project, which will be implemented in September, is expected to be commissioned in June 2027.
