Huawei has confirmed that the upcoming Mate 70 series will be the first to launch with the official version of its in-house operating system, HarmonyOS NEXT. This was announced during the Huawei HDC 2024 developer conference, which also indicated an expected release window in the fourth quarter of this year (October to December).

Now a new leak from a prolific whistleblower Digital Chat Station It suggests that the Mate 70 will feature the next-generation HiSilicon Kirin 5G SoC, indicating Huawei’s continued commitment to its own chipset development.

The phone is also rumoured to feature an in-house 50MP CMOS image sensor with an ultra-wide base, likely OmniVision.

Digital Chat Station also hints that Huawei is working on a “heavier product”, but it is reportedly facing production difficulties due to extremely low productivity. While it is not clear what this product is exactly, it could be the new high-end model of the Mate 70 series.

Another positive sign for the HarmonyOS ecosystem comes from comments made by a consultant, who claims that the ubiquitous Chinese messaging and social networking app WeChat is working on developing a native app for the consumer version of HarmonyOS NEXT.
