Today, Lei Jun released a video revealing the insides of a series of MIX Flip prototypes, explaining to users why Xiaomi’s foldable clamshell has yet to be released. You can see the prototypes’ renders below.

As you can see, the first prototype had a triangular camera that also included a small screen. Although the design is unique, Xiaomi decided to abandon it due to the lack of practicality of the small screen. The small screen can only be used as a reminder of the message.

The second prototype featured a circular external display integrated with the camera module. Xiaomi reportedly planned to offer a smartwatch-like interface for the external display. This plan was rejected because its functionality overlapped with that of a smartwatch.

A more recent prototype has a much larger outer screen, with the cameras reportedly on the other side. It also has a button at the top on the right edge of the outer screen. This plan was rejected because it would be impossible to use the rear camera for selfies.

In the end, Xiaomi has managed to overcome all the limitations. The final product has a large external display with narrow and almost uniform bezels on all four sides and two circular cutouts for the rear camera setup.
