Recently released OnePlus North 4 It’s the first 5G phone to feature a unibody aluminum construction. While this build option offers a more solid feel and the potential for better impact resistance, it also makes DIY repairs a pain.

Tech teardown specialist PBKReviews recently took a look at the inner workings of the Nord 4, and it didn’t go smoothly. In the video, the metal back that gives the phone its solid feel is seen to be extremely difficult to open, making it difficult to access key components.

Even removing the top glass cover was difficult, despite the YouTuber’s initial success with the plastic tool. However, removing the metal back requires metal tools, increasing the risk of scratching or denting the phone’s smooth aluminum body.

However, the Nord 4 may have a positive side (pun intended). The aluminum build feels more solid than the ubiquitous glass-topped phones. The Oasis Green shell is resistant to bending attempts despite its slim profile. Plus, an IP65 dust and water resistance rating means the phone can withstand minor spills and exposure to dust.

The news isn’t all bad for DIY repairs. The phone’s 5,500mAh battery uses an adhesive cover for easier removal and replacement. Alternatively, the top-end 120Hz Aqua Touch AMOLED display can be removed and replaced – just be careful of the ribbon connector in the bottom-left corner.

Despite these positive points, PBKReviews gave the Nord 4 a disappointing 4/10 repairability score, falling behind even the recently reviewed CMF Phone 1. While the metal build does add durability, it appears that repairing the Nord 4 yourself will be a time-consuming, laborious task and a potentially risky endeavor.
