An analogue of AirDrop for file sharing between Windows and Android has appeared – here’s how it works

The update is expected to close the functionality gap between Windows and macOS, providing a seamless experience for users of both operating systems. Techno 24.

How does it work?

This new feature uses the Phone Link app and works similarly to AirDrop on Apple devices, so to use this tool, users will need to sync their devices using the Phone Link app (available on Google Play).

Once the synchronization is complete, transferring files is very simple:

  • Right-click on the desired file, select “Share” from the context menu.
  • Then select Phone Connection.
  • Since the initial synchronization via Phone Connect is sufficient, the selected file will be sent directly to the synchronized mobile device without the need for additional permissions.
  • System requirements for this feature require Windows 10 or Windows 11 with the May 2019 update or later.
  • Additionally, the user’s mobile device must be running Android 9.0 or later and have the Link to Windows app version 1.24032.518.0 or later installed.
  • Link Phone version 1.24032.156.0 or later is required on the computer.

When will the new feature work?

File transfer between PCs and Android smartphones is currently being tested by members of the Release Preview program. It is not yet known when it will be available to a wider audience.
