Who won?

It became the leader to receive the Best of Show award, the most prestigious award in the field of classic cars 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sport Its competitors were the 1948 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Saoutchik Fastback Coupé, the 1934 Packard 1108 Twelve LeBaron Sport Phaeton and the 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero concept.

Since 2001, Pebble has had classes for such unrestored cars, and the preservation classes are now divided into pre-war and post-war categories. With Bugatti’s victory, we are finally starting to see the competition evolve from the hyper-restored pre-war cars that have always been the focus of attention. This Type 59 is also pre-war, but it’s not a car we’re used to seeing win.

  • Bugatti built only five Type 59s at one time. Company founder Ettore Bugatti sold four of them, keeping this one after winning the 1934 Belgian Grand Prix and finishing third in Monaco. He removed the supercharger from the straight-8 engine and fitted the Type 59 with a new two-seater sports body and motorcycle fenders, then registered as the Type 57 and won a series of races in 1937.
  • The car was later purchased by King Leopold III of Belgium and painted black with a yellow Belgian stripe, which he still retains today.
  • Gooding & Co sold this Type 59 for just over $12 million in 2020.

The Type 59 beat out 214 vehicles from 16 countries, but that wasn’t the only award it brought home. It also won first place in the Pre-War Endurance Class and the Stanford Center for Automotive Research (CARS) Automotive Innovation Award. In terms of the number of Best of Show wins, Bugatti tied with Mercedes-Benz with ten.

I am very happy for the car, I am very happy for Bugatti. This car is incredible. It has a huge history behind it, it is one of the most successful Bugattis of all time and to win it means a lot to me. It was the first time a Swiss won, it was the first time a European won, it was the first time a bodyguard won. [а не реставрація]. More importantly, protection is also accepted as a car can only be original once. And it drives very well
– says the current owner of the car, Fritz Burkard.
