The countdown begins. If everything goes according to rumors, we will meet the iPhone 16 very soon on September 10. At this point, we believe we know almost everything about its design, some leaked features, and the operation of its cameras and related hardware in the last hours.

A capacitive capture button, new lenses, and a new unknown format. We’re collecting all the information leaked so far about the cameras of these devices.

AppleInsider sources assure that this year there will be significant improvements in the camera of the iPhone 16. The base models will retain the dual camera configuration, vertically aligned to facilitate spatial video recording in this generation. Zoom will continue to be two magnifications, achieved by cropping the sensor to minimize quality losses.

The second camera will be an ultra-wide-angle camera, which in this generation will go from an f/2.4 aperture lens to an f/2.2 aperture lens. This will make it a little brighter, but it’s not expected to be a particularly significant leap in quality on these models. It’s also expected to be compatible with the macro function that was previously reserved for the Pro versions of the basic iPhones.

The most notable change is expected to come with the iPhone 16 Pro. The main sensor will be the same, 48 megapixels with an f/1.78 aperture. The iPhone 16 Pro’s telephoto camera will become the five-fold tetraprism we saw on the iPhone 15 Pro Max last year, repeating the configuration on the 16 Pro Max.

The ultra-wide angle will feature a revamped 48-megapixel sensor, a crucial step towards improving one of the iPhone’s most classic weak points.

In addition to these hardware changes, the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to be able to shoot in HEIF, JPEG, JPEG Max, HEIF Max, ProRaw and ProRAW Max, as well as an additional format called JPEG-XL. It has not been detailed what the difference will be between JPEG Max (JPEG at 48 megapixels) and JPEG-XL.

“Once it’s in the camera app, it will have pressure sensitivity and will be connected to a developer API. This could lock exposure and focus before you press all the way down to take a photo, for example.”

But the most notable feature will be a new capture button. It’s been rumored for months and is said to be coming to four iPhone models. It’ll be in the bottom right corner and will be capacitive. It’ll be designed to be used only with camera apps, not as configurable as the existing action button on the Pro models.

As we always say, rumors are rumors. Apple has not confirmed a single piece of information about the specifications of the iPhone 16, nor is it expected to do so. Fortunately, knowing them in detail is becoming less and less common.
