Tesla left behind: Who is the new leader in electric car sales in Europe?

Who is leading now?

Last month, BMW sold more electric cars than Tesla in Europe for the first time, with the German company leading the market, which saw very different results by country.

But first, some general statistics that apply to all types of cars, both electric and fuel-powered:

  • According to new data, last month in Europe 1.03 million cars were registered, which is 2% morecompared to the same period last year.
  • Despite falling sales in Germany (-2%), France (-2%) and Belgium (-7%), other EU markets contributed to growth. Portugal (+19%), Poland (+19%) and Slovakia (+12%) helped boost sales, while the UK (+3%), Italy (+5%) and Spain (+5%) saw moderate growth.
  • SUV sales broke a new record in July, reaching 554,000 units, up 6% compared to the previous year.
  • Sales of Volvo, BMW, Toyota, Mercedes and Geely increased the most.
  • Volkswagen led the way with a 26 percent share of sales across all car types, followed by Hyundai (including Kia) with a 12 percent share.
  • Luxury SUVs (F-SUVs) led the growth with 5,022 models registered, up 32% from a year ago.
  • Last month, sales of large SUVs increased by 23% (27,600), while sales of mid-size models fell by 7% (106,500).

Despite this growth, statistics show that sales of electric cars are falling: if in July 2023 14.6% of all registered cars were electric, in July 2024 this figure was already 13.5%. This means that people bought slightly more petrol cars.

BMW surpasses Tesla for first time in electric car salesThe German company sold 14,869 units, 35% more. Tesla came in second with 14,561 registered models, followed by Volkswagen (12,213), Volvo (10,533) and Audi (8,618). BMW’s latest models, including the iX1, i4 and i5, saw strong growth, with the new iX2 registering more than 1,300. The iX1 and i4 were the sixth and seventh best-selling electric cars in Europe last month, with 4,305 (+25%) and 4,198 (+23%) registered models, respectively.

This is a very interesting statistic Shows Tesla’s sharp declineAt the beginning of the year, the company sold 178,700 models in Europe, compared to BMW’s 97,525 and VW’s 88,445. But despite this decline, Tesla’s Model Y was still the best-selling electric car in Europe last month, based on each model, not necessarily the overall car type.
