In the coming years, tri-fold phones could become the next big trend in the smartphone industry. TCL showcased the world’s first functional tri-fold phone at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2024 in May, but it is not yet available for purchase. There is speculation that Huawei’s tri-fold device, which is expected to be released in the next few months, could be the world’s first commercially available tri-fold phone. The new development suggests that Xiaomi could also launch a tri-fold smartphone in the near future.

In a post on Weibo, user Smart Pikachu mentions that Xiaomi has started developing a tri-fold (triple) foldable smartphone. Unfortunately, he did not share any information regarding the technical specifications of the device.

Most likely, Xiaomi’s triple-decker phone could be officially introduced in 2025. The device will most likely be equipped with the HyperOS 2.0 operating system, a camera from Leica, and the flagship Snapdragon chipset.

Xiaomi currently offers two types of foldable phones. The Mix Fold 4, which was launched last month, is the fourth generation of the company’s horizontal foldable smartphones. Meanwhile, the Mix Flip, which was launched alongside the Mix Fold 4, is the company’s first phone with a foldable, flip-style display.

According to reports, Huawei’s trio of phones could be hitting the Chinese market as early as September. The image above, which shows Huawei’s Consumer Business CEO Yu Richard using the alleged device, shows what the device will look like when folded. The device is assumed to have a dual-hinged system, allowing it to open up to reveal a large display with a diagonal of around 10 inches. The inner display is said to feature a punch-hole for the camera in the upper left corner.

Huawei’s triple-stack offering will be powered by its own Kirin chipset. The device is expected to be officially launched in September alongside other products like the Nova 13 series smartphones and the Watch GT 5 series smartwatches.
