In general, the function of reactions to certain parts of the text works as well as comments. The animation from Google shows how to display the smiley response feature as a third option, along with “Add Comment” and “Suggest Edit” when selecting text. You can also use the search in the smiley catalogue. Google says these answers are “less formal alternatives to comments.”
Emoji reactions have become one of the main products of modern software and are available in many messaging programs (iMessage, Facebook Messenger) and social networks (Facebook and Twitter in limited testing).
Emoji responses are coming to Google Docs as the service undergoes major changes and evolves from a regular word processor to a remote collaboration tool.
Other new features recently announced in Google Docs include a new pageless layout and the ability to easily create draft emails from a document.
Google notes that emoji reactions will be enabled by default and cannot be disabled. They’re currently available for high-speed domains, but most Google Docs users will be available after April 20.
