OPPO’s Reno12 family continues to grow. At the beginning of July, we had the opportunity to examine the Reno12 Pro in detail, and it showed us that this model is one of the most balanced smartphones we can currently find in stores. From any price segment. And this mobile is mid-range. An ambitious mid-range, but still mid-range. In any case, we want to keep in mind that it has a lot in common with the two phones to which we dedicate this article.
The Reno12 F and FS inherit the same defining characteristics. This first contact was enough for me to understand that they are also very balanced smartphones, without any major shortcomings. However, it is necessary to point out that the versions with 4G connectivity give us the Qualcomm Snapdragon 685 SoC, while the versions with 5G connectivity also offer the MediaTek Dimensity 6300 chip, as you can see in the table we publish below. lines, RAM and secondary storage also vary depending on the model. In all other features, these two mobiles are identical.

Two mid-range phones with premium finishes
OPPO has made no compromises with the design and finish of the new Reno12 F and FS. When you hold these phones in your hands, you feel like you are using a high-end smartphone, especially when you examine the back. And the ring where the rear cameras are located is really great. It is elegant and also barely protrudes beyond the surface of the phone, so it is clear that OPPO engineers have put in a lot of effort to ensure that the design of this Reno12 is up to par.
OPPO promises us that this OLED panel can cover 100% of the DCI-P3 color space
On the other hand, the quality of the screen is also high. I would have liked to have been able to analyze it in an area with more light, but this first contact was enough for me to understand that the OLED panel is really bright. In fact, according to OPPO, it produces 600 nits in typical conditions, but under direct sunlight this Capable of touching 1,200 nits. The 2,100 nits that I listed in the specification table define the maximum peak value that the organic matrix can reach in a limited area of the screen. One more note: OPPO promises us that this panel can cover 100% of the DCI-P3 color space.
In the detail photo below, we can see the ring that gathers the three rear cameras. The main unit has a 50-megapixel sensor and f/1.8 aperture optics, open-loop focus motor and optical stabilization. The ultra-wide-angle camera is based on an 8-megapixel sensor working together with f/2.2 aperture optics. It has a 112-degree field of view. Finally, the macro camera offers us a 2-megapixel sensor working hand in hand with an f/2.4 aperture optical block. This last unit has an 89-degree field of view and fixed focus.
A very interesting note: the module that brings together the rear cameras is surrounded by a circular LED that changes color when a call comes in, the mobile phone is charging, a notification is received or when listening to music, among other possibilities. Users can fully customize it halo behavior (OPPO calls it that) to light up with a specific color when a predefined event occurs.
The interface that allows us to move on the cameras seems very intuitive to me. The truth is that it only took me a few seconds to find all the shooting modes and settings parameters I was looking for, and this certainly did not happen to me on all OPPO smartphones.
It is clear that from generation to generation, the engineers of this brand have noticeably improved both the camera software and its software. photo post-processing algorithms. During this first contact, I was able to see a few reference photos that OPPO gave me, but since I did not have the opportunity to calmly take my own photos, I cannot draw a definitive conclusion.
Artificial intelligence is the real hero
The entire Reno12 family supports OPPO’s commitment to artificial intelligence (AI). When my colleague Ricardo had the opportunity to analyze this terminal in depth, he praised some of the functions implemented in the Reno12 Pro and I will essentially do the same for the functions found in the new Reno12 F and FS.
AI algorithms are not executed locally using the mobile device’s own hardware; they run in OPPO’s data center
One important thing users want to know is that AI algorithms are not executed locally using the mobile phone’s hardware; They work in OPPO’s data center. I was able to ask a person responsible for this brand about this decision, and he explained to me that in this way the AI performance takes advantage of the high power of OPPO servers and is not limited by the hardware of the smartphone. One thing is clear: as we will see in a moment, this AI is really advanced.
In the photo below, we see the result of applying the effect of removing objects and people from an image using artificial intelligence. It is nothing new. It is also available on many other mobile phones. However, in the areas where an object or person needs to be removed, the image reconstruction performed by OPPO’s AI is extremely realistic. So much so that it is almost impossible to detect that the original photo has been manipulated. It is really amazing.
In the last photo we can see another of the effects that OPPO has implemented to take more advantage of its artificial intelligence. On this occasion it offers us several predefined templates from which we can draw inspiration to recreate a very realistic image in which we are the protagonist. In this case my face changes very successfully The real face of a firefighter on duty. It’s just a game, but the truth is that the end result is surprisingly convincing. One last curiosity: OPPO has reached an agreement with Iker Casillas to include several templates starring this famous former footballer in Reno12.
