This year, Apple introduced not one but two all-new chipsets: the A18 and A18 Pro. The former goes to the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, while the latter goes to the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.
The A18 Pro is built on the 3nm process, but with a more advanced and efficient next-generation manufacturing process. The A18 Pro has the “fastest processor in any smartphone” and consists of 6 cores; two main cores handle the heavy lifting, plus four power-efficient cores. Combined, they perform 15% better than the A17 Pro processor, while consuming 20% less power.
As for the GPU, it gets a desktop-class architecture and can perform 20% better than its predecessor, as well as perform ray tracing twice as fast.
Improved memory bandwidth and larger cache size give the A18 Pro support for ProMotion display, Always-On display, faster USB 3 speeds, and ProRes video recording. All of these features are not available on the regular iPhone 16.
A new image processing unit has also appeared, which increases the speed of the camera and data processing for video encoding. It works twice as fast compared to the A17 Pro.
Of course, the AI capabilities are now better. The NPU received 16 cores capable of performing 35 trillion operations per second. It is expected to be twice as fast and more efficient than the previous model.
The Apple A18 chip also has a new NPU, a 6-core CPU with the same cores that’s 30% faster than last year’s A16 Bionic, which was fitted to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. It also uses 30% less power than the previous model.
The difference lies in the GPU and its image processing capabilities. The GPU has a 5-core setup instead of a 6-core one. It’s still plenty fast, though; Apple claims a 40 percent increase in graphics performance over the A16 Bionic, while consuming 35 percent less power.
Apple introduced its flagship smartphone, the iPhone 16 Pro, at a presentation held yesterday after the announcement of the standard iPhone 16. In the morning, we published a photo of the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro packaging. In iOS 18, Apple adds a new option that allows you to pause the video while recording. The iPhone 16 Pro supports the latest JPEG-XL image format. The iPhone 16 took the old USB-C with Lightning speed, and the iPhone 16 Pro kept the same data transfer speed as the iPhone 15 Pro.
