Yesterday Apple introduced the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro, a rather moderate evolution compared to the last generation models. New processor, some changes to the camera and artificial intelligence that will not yet reach Europe.

But one of the most important developments has been little discussed. It is a feature that I have been waiting for years and that should mark the before and after in terms of both performance and the consumption of the phone itself. For the first time in their history, iPhones have a cooling system.

Apple hasn’t detailed how the cooling system works, and we’ll have to wait to test it thoroughly to see if the data is accurate. However, we do have a few glimpses of how it works.

On iPhone 16. iPhone 16 will improve heat dissipation by using materials like graphite inside. The distribution of components has been redesigned to ensure that heat is concentrated only in certain areas, further promising a significant increase in sustained performance.

In particular, Apple tells us of a 30% improvement in sustained performance, which is important in heavy games. This move seems logical, considering that iOS is one of the few systems that supports the execution of alternatives such as ‘Genshin Impact’ at 120 FPS.

On iPhone 16 Pro. In the case of the iPhone 16 Pro, the idea is similar, although the implementation is not the same. Graphite is again used as the material that conducts heat from the chip to the chassis, it is made of aluminum but its substructure is made of this heat sink material. In the case of the iPhone 16 Pro, a 20% improvement in sustained performance is mentioned.

It may not be enoughApple has chosen not to use a vapor chamber, one of the most advanced and effective systems for dissipating heat today. This mechanism uses a metal tube filled with a low-pressure liquid that transfers heat to lower the temperature of the device when it changes state between liquid and vapor.

As we mentioned, steam rooms are based on the same principle as heat pipes or heat pipes. heat pipesBoth consist of a metal channel connected to the component you want to cool, such as a cell phone processor. This channel is filled with a refrigerant and has an exchange area where the heat is converted to vapor, cooled, and condensed again.

Restriction issues. Apple has been having a throttling problem on its phones for years. This is, in a nutshell, a problem that occurs when a mobile phone overheats and starts to lose its performance. Not only is the power reduced, but the maximum brightness is also limited so that the terminal does not continue to consume energy.

Better thermal dissipation will allow the new iPhones to maintain maximum brightness for longer and achieve sustained performance on par with their main rivals.
