Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today that demand for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max was “lower than expected” as the devices went up for pre-order in the U.S. and dozens of other countries on Friday. Kuo said his data was based on a “supply chain survey” and shipping estimates listed on Apple’s online store.

Kuo estimated that sales of the four iPhone 16 models reached about 37 million units in the first weekend after Apple began accepting pre-orders, a figure that was down about 13% from the first weekend of the iPhone 15 series last year. The analyst noted that the main factor behind the decline was weak demand for the Pro models, with first weekend sales of the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max down 27% and 16%, respectively, compared to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max sales from the corresponding period last year.

According to Kuo, the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus saw higher demand than the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus during the first weekend of sales, but that wasn’t enough to offset lower demand for the Pro model.

Kuo said the main reason for lower-than-expected demand for the iPhone 16 Pro models was that the devices did not have Apple Intelligence when they were released on Friday. Instead, the first Apple Intelligence features will appear in iOS 18.1 in October. The analyst also said the iPhone is facing “fierce competition” in China.
