OPPO Tri-Fold will not appear in the near future

Huawei recently made headlines with its triple-fold device, the Huawei Mate XT Ultimate. So, can we expect similar devices from other brands? While patent applications suggest that Xiaomi has been working on a triple-fold device for a while now, OPPO China President Liu Bo has confirmed that we won’t be seeing a triple-fold device from OPPO anytime soon.

OPPO sees the triple-folded product as a tech showcase rather than a mass-market product

At a media event held at OPPO’s flagship store, the company explained that while the tri-fold form factor had been part of their research in the past, they currently do not see enough market demand for such a device. Liu Bo emphasized that OPPO’s core strategy is to focus on producing quality mobile phones and important peripherals. He believes that there is still room for improvement in current product categories and wants to prioritize improvements in these areas before exploring new form factors such as the tri-fold.

Huawei’s innovative tri-fold device is generating a lot of interest, but it comes with a hefty price tag of reportedly over $10,000 and is currently only available in China. The tri-fold design currently looks more like a tech showcase than a mass-market product, which could be one reason why OPPO has decided to wait for other companies to experiment with this new format.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, is rumored to launch its own tri-fold device by 2025. Xiaomi’s tri-fold model has already been spotted on the IMEI database and is scheduled to launch in 2026. According to reports, Xiaomi is working on three different tri-fold designs that could feature unique folding mechanisms. Additionally, the 2025 model is rumored to be button-less, potentially making it one of the first smartphones in the industry to be completely free of physical buttons.

For now, it looks like we’ll have to wait and see if OPPO decides to join the three-way race. In the meantime, the company is focusing on its 2024 flagship series, the Find X8 series, which is scheduled to launch on October 21.
