iPhone 16 Pro Max shows disappointing charging results in testing

Apple published a series iPhone 16 with larger batteries and faster charging. While Apple hasn’t fully disclosed the battery capacity and charging speed of the new iPhones, Chinese regulatory filings indicate that all models iPhone 16 Designed for charging speed up to 45W. Theoretically, it is expected to offer much faster charging for new models compared to previous models.

But we already know that the power of the power adapter or the nominal speed of the phone is not as important as its specific settings and atmosphere.

ChargerLAB did extensive testing with several compatible chargers to find out how fast Apple’s latest and greatest iPhone really charges, and the results were disappointing, to say the least.

First, ChargerLAB shows that the phone lacks the E-marker chip, which is the protocol controller that controls power and data transfer on USB Type-C cables. This technology is used in USB-PD chargers that support high output current and higher data transfer rates.

Charging test of iPhone 16 Pro Max with Apple chargers

The iPhone 16 Pro Max with Apple’s official 140W charger and original cable charged at only 30.19W during testing; This is much lower than the claimed 45W charging speed. You can see the charging speed recorded by ChargerLAB with other official Apple adapters in the image below.

So, we can say that the charging speed of iPhone 16 Pro Max is around 30 W. This is only slightly higher than the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s nominal charging speed of 27W. While this is an improvement, the 45W charging speed may confuse people planning to upgrade to one of the latest models.

ChargerLAB tested the phone with several third-party chargers; here the phone reached a maximum charging speed of 31.86W, which is very similar to the speed of official chargers.

Based on the results, we can say that the charging speed of the iPhone 16 Pro Max is limited to about 30W, which is only slightly higher than the nominal charging speed of 27W of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. While this is an improvement, the 45W charging speed may confuse people planning to upgrade to one of the latest models.
