Remember the rumors about super thin? iPhone 17 “Air” or “Thin” ? A recent announcement by a Taiwanese display manufacturer may add fuel to the fire. A Taiwanese company called Novatek recently announced the start of OLED production using a new process called Touch and Display Driver Integration (TDDI).
As the name suggests, this display will combine the touch layer with the display driver in a single unit. This may seem like a small adjustment but it can have a big impact on the thickness of the phone. By dispensing with a separate layer, manufacturers can reduce precious millimeters of the phone’s overall thickness.
iPhone 17 Air/Slim may use TDDI OLED display
report now DigiTimes It shows that Apple could be one of Novatek’s first TDDI display customers. And it’s easy to see why. We’ve heard rumors of the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air (or Slim), which is expected to replace the “Plus” model. The new TDDI display could help Apple reduce the size of the phone and achieve the thinness it aims for.
However, this is not a guaranteed match. DigiTimes It suggests that Apple may test the technology on other devices first, such as the upcoming iPad or Apple Watch. Perhaps even the rumored foldable iPhone or iPad could benefit from this new display technology.
So what else do we know about the iPhone 17 Air/Slim? According to previous reports, it will have a 6.6-inch display with Dynamic Island and 120Hz ProMotion support.
For better performance, it may get Apple’s next-generation A19 chip, which is expected to be built on TSMC’s advanced 3nm technology. The August report also suggested that Apple may update the selfie camera on the entire iPhone 17 series, replacing the 12-megapixel lens with a high-resolution 24-megapixel camera.
If the rumors are true, the iPhone 17 Slim will not be cheap. It is expected to be the most expensive model in the series, with a starting price of around $1,299. In comparison, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max are expected to be priced at $1,099 and $1,199 respectively.
