Next Web A few days ago he published an accurate analysis on why Artificial Intelligence does not work as a great sales argument for new smartphones.

This article highlights Apple Intelligence integration by pointing out that Apple lost more than $100 billion in stock market value after launching the iPhone 16.

But the problem goes further.

The industry is repeating the mistakes it made before the iPhone. In 2006, manufacturers were racing to add more features to the smartphones they were already producing. Better QWERTY keyboards, larger color screens, synchronization with PC. They are all built on operating systems designed for the pre-touch era.

Then the iPhone came, Android came, and they changed everything. Not because they have more functions, They redesigned from scratch what a smartphone should be like.

We see the same picture today. Major tech companies are racing to add more AI features to devices designed 15 years ago. But AI needs its own iPhone, a metonym for a device built from the ground up with voice interaction, natural language processing, and contextual understanding in mind.

There are very hopeful signs. OpenAI project that wants to develop its own project wearable Written by Jony Ive or Ray-Ban Meta point to devices that integrate AI in a more natural way.

These aren’t smartphones with artificial intelligence plastered on them, but New product categories that adapt to new technologynot the old devices trying to box it in.

The real mobile AI revolution will not happen by adding functions to existing mobile phones. This will come when someone re-imagines from scratch what a personal device should be like in the age of artificial intelligence.

Google, Apple, Samsung or OpenAI can achieve this. Or maybe it’s an initiative we don’t know about yet. But one thing is clear: following the path of BlackBerry and Nokia (piling more features on top of older platforms) is not the solution.

AI needs its iPhone moment. A device that not only adds AI, but makes it the core of a new way to interact with AI and communicate with others.

in Xataka | There’s an uncomfortable truth for Apple: They’ve become clear followers thanks to generative AI, and that’s not going to change, at least not this year.
