According to Swedish composer Jakob Mulrad, it is the first time in the history of music that a robot has achieved such a success. In fact, the machine played a piece by Mulraad with the Malmö Symphony Orchestra at the Malmö Live Concert Hall earlier this month.
At the heart of the robot’s software is artificial intelligence programmed and specially trained for this situation.
How the robot played the cello: video
Mulrad says he learned about Granny’s work and became interested:
He actually worked with two industrial robot manipulators that could play the cello. I thought this was really interesting, because obviously there are a lot of pianos that play themselves, but a stringed instrument is very complex. So it was very interesting how it actually worked. So I asked him if the robot cello had ever played in an orchestra before. he said no
said the composer.
Mulrad is known for combining classical music with modern motifs. He says writing music for a robot helped him explore his creativity from a different angle: “For me as a composer, it’s kind of liberating to go beyond the human anatomy when thinking about what to write for the cello.”
The artist stated that the use of artificial intelligence is “a topic being considered for future projects.” It is not clear what he means because he does not go into details. Similar demonstrations will probably be held in the future. Despite this, he says he does not see a world where human musicians will be replaced by robots.
