Scientists have created headphones that create a “sound bubble” for conversations in all conditions

How does it work?

Sound Bubble headphones use artificial intelligence to create a virtual quiet zone or “sound bubble” around the user that extends up to 1-2 meters 24 Channels with reference New Atlas.

The device provides clear communication in noisy places such as restaurants, bars or other crowded places by amplifying the sounds inside the bubble and blocking outside noise.

The current model resembles standard headphones with two speakers and six microphones built into the ear cups. Using advanced artificial intelligence technologies, the system analyzes the phase shifts of sound waves at different frequencies, determines the distance to different sound sources and suppresses distant noises.

How sound bubble headphones work – watch the video:

Shyam Gollakota, the lead author of the study, explained the innovation as follows:

Our AI system can actually determine the distance to every sound source in the room and process this on the hearing aid in real time within 8 milliseconds.

This allows the device to selectively amplify sounds within the bubble by filtering out background noise.

Currently, the system requires all participants to wear Sound Bubble headphones so that conversations can take place in a quiet area. But developers are working to integrate this technology into smaller headphones, which will make it more affordable and practical for everyday use.

Who will need it?

Potential applications of this innovation range from use at home for private conversations in noisy environments to improving communication for the hearing impaired. Scientists are optimistic about the technology’s ability to redefine the way people interact in noisy environments and continue to work to improve the device.
